Until the 19th century, the Dutch people had almost no surnames; instead, they used their father's name. For example, if a Dutch man named Dirk had a daughter named Janett, she would be called Janett Dirksdr. During the French occupation (1810-1813), the people were forced to adopt surnames, so most Dutch surnames consist of references to the father's name or place of birth. A surname like Van der Bilt means 'from the city of Bilt'. Interestingly, many Dutch people thought the law on surnames was a temporary measure. Therefore, to annoy the French, they chose surnames like Naaktgeboren (born naked) or Piest (peeing).
