One of the organizers of the Uzbek national theater, the talented director Muzaffar Muhamedov was born in Tashkent in 1902. He began his creative activity in 1918 as an actor in the theater group led by Hamza in Tashkent, and then worked as an actor in the Uzbek Model Drama Group from 1919 to 1924.
After studying at the Moscow Uzbek Drama Studio from 1924 to 1927, M. Muhamedov returned to work as a chief director at the Andijan Theater (1928-1930), the Uzbek State Musical Theater (1930-1939), and as a director at the Alisher Navoi Opera and Ballet Theater (1939-1943 and from 1950). He also served as the chief director of the Muqimiy Musical Drama and Comedy Theater (1943-1950). During this period, he demonstrated vibrant creative activity, successfully staging dozens of dramas, musical dramas, and opera works, and made a great contribution to the development of Uzbek theatrical art as a stage director.
Many of the works he staged, including T. Aminov’s «Zafar», S. Husayn’s «Victory», Fitrat’s «Arslon», C. Gozzi’s «Princess Turandot»; musical dramas such as K. Yashin and R. Glier’s «Gulsara», K. Yashin and T. Jalilov’s «Layli and Majnun», G’. Zafariy’s «Halima», S. Abdulla, T. Jalilov, and B. Brovtsin’s «Tohir and Zuhra», Z. Fatkhullin and D. Zokirov’s «Flower Buds», S. Abdulla, T. Jalilov, and B. Nadyojdin’s «Alpomish»; and operas such as R. Glier and T. Sodiqov’s «Gulsara» and «Layli and Majnun», S. Vasilenko and M. Ashrafiy’s «Great Canal», R. Hamroev’s «Light from Darkness», and S. Boboev’s «Hamza», took a unique place in the gold treasury of Uzbek theater art.
M. Muhamedov was also active as a playwright, creating in creative cooperation with K. Yashin the play “Inside” (1932), the opera-librettos “Gulsara” (1948), “Dilorom” (1958), and with S. Abdulla, “Maysara’s Trick” (1958).
Muzaffar Muhamedov passed away in 1995 in Tashkent.
