Biography

A talented poetess and author of captivating prose works, Saida Zunnunova was born into a white-collar family in the city of Andijan in 1926. Orphaned early by her father, Saida studied at the Andijan Pedagogical Institute from 1941 to 1943. She worked as a teacher in Andijan schools and as a literary staff member at newspaper editorial offices. Saida Zunnunova's first poem was published in the «Paxta Fronti» newspaper in 1945.

Her love for literature led the young poetess to the Faculty of Philology at the Central Asian State University (now the National University of Uzbekistan). After completing her studies, she worked as a consultant at the «Gulxan» magazine, the «O‘zbekiston Madaniyati» newspaper, the Fiction Publishing House, and the Writers' Union of Uzbekistan.

Saida Zunnunova passed away in 1977 after a serious illness at the prime of her life.

She was the beloved wife of the writer Said Ahmad. They have an only daughter and grandchildren.

The poetess's poetry collections, such as «Qizingiz Yozdi» (1948), «Yangi She’rlar» (1950), «Gullar Vodiysi» (1954), «Qizlarjon», and «Bir Yil O‘ylari» (1967), which celebrate youthful joy, the spirit of the Motherland, and the delight of labor, were received with great joy by readers.

Saida Zunnunova is also a writer who was prolific in prose. While her collection of short stories «Gulbahor» (1956) reflects the lives of workers and themes of family and love, the main protagonists of her novella «Gulxan» (1958) are women, and their struggles in the twenties are expressed in unique artistic colors. The protagonists of works such as «Olov» (1962), «Bo‘ylaringdan O‘rgilay» (1972), and «Direktor» are also women.
