Biography

Ulug'bek attended secondary school from 1975 to 1985. In 1988, he entered the Faculty of Philology at Tashkent State University. In 1992, he continued his studies in Turkey. Returning to Tashkent in 1993, he completed his master's degree and then his postgraduate studies.

From 1993 to 1994, he taught Turkish at the Institute of Oriental Studies. Between 1994 and 1996, he attended full-time postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Uzbek Philology of what is now the National University.

In 1997, he defended his candidate dissertation on the topic of "The problem of 'pure lyricism' in Uzbek poetry of the 30s." Since that year, he has been working as a researcher at the Alisher Navoi Institute of Language and Literature. Currently, he is working on his doctoral dissertation titled "Socio-psychological foundations of the evolution of artistic thought in 20th-century Uzbek poetry."

Ulug'bek writes in both poetry and prose. His collection of novellas and stories titled "Loneliness" (Yolg'izlik), published in 1998, sparked certain debates. This is because the novella included in this book is plotless, which is completely different from the epic works we are accustomed to. In some aspects, the work resembles a diary, yet it lacks the chronological consistency typical of a diary. The 'reality' in it can be considered a product of the protagonist's stream of consciousness.

In his 1997 novel "Balance" (Muvozanat), Ulug'bek strives to artistically discover various destinies. It is known that the process of transitioning from one socio-political system to another does not pass smoothly in people's minds. Yusuf, the protagonist of the work, also faces certain difficulties and problems and suffers while trying to achieve balance of heart, but overcomes them spiritually and morally.

Ulug'bek Hamdam's first poetry collection, "Rebellion Leading to Allah" (Tangriga eltuvchi isyon), was published in 2001, followed by the collection "Rose" (Atirgul) in 2005. The poems in these collections are predominantly influenced by modern literature.

Ulug'bek Hamdam's novel "Rebellion and Obedience" (Isyon va itoat), published in 2004, also became one of the important events in contemporary literary life.

Since 2009, he has been serving as the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Sharq Yulduzi" (Star of the East).

He has published poetry collections such as "Rebellion Leading to Allah" (2002), "Rose" (2006), "I Waited for You" (2007), and prose works including "Loneliness" (2000), "Balance" (2003), "Rebellion and Obedience" (2004), "Sabo and Samandar," and "Dilnura in the Distance" (2010). He also has collections of scholarly works ("Evolution of Artistic Thought," 2003; "Need for Renewal," 2007).

Ulug'bek Hamdam also translates from the kindred Turkish language. His translations of Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi's "Inside is Within" (1997, 2001) and Professor Osman Turan's "Ideology of Turkic Peoples" (1995) have been published as individual books.
